What Is Bangla/Bengali?
Bengali or Bangla is an Indo-Aryan language of South Asia that evolved as
a successor to Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit. Bengali is the English word for
the name of the language and for its speakers; the language itself is
called Bangla. Bangla is the official language of the country Bangladesh.
More than 98% of the total population of Bangladesh speak Bangla as a
native language.
Bangla is the fourth most spoken language in terms of number of speakers.
With more than 200 million native speakers, it is the fourth or fifth most
widely spoken language in the world (after English, Spanish, Mandarin and
Hindustani (Hindi-Urdu). The Bangla language is spoken by the second and
even third generation of migrants to the west.
Bangla is native to the region known as Bengal, which comprises Bangladesh
and the Indian state of West Bengal.
The Bangla language
has been under threat in the past, it's native speakers had to protest and
even die to protect the language. On Feb 21, 1952 Bengali students and
activists protested a decision by the Central Pakistani government to
establish Urdu as the national language for the whole of Pakistan
(Bangladesh was then called East Pakistan), this resulted in a number of
deaths. In 1961 the government of the Indian State of Assam passed a
legislation making the use of Assamese language compulsory, this
legislation resulted in widespread protests across Assam, 11 people died
in one of these protest. Coming under extreme pressure the Government
withdrew the legislation.
Nazrul Islam is a renowned artist
